Proof of funds for a study visa in 2026: Germany, Canada and the UK compared

In autumn 2026 Germany asks students for €992 per month in a blocked account (€11,904 a year), Canada for CAD 23,448 of living costs plus first-year tuition, and the UK for £1,171–£1,529 per month for up to nine months, held for 28 days. Always confirm the figure on the official page before you apply.

Germany: the blocked account

Most non-EU students show funds through a blocked account (Sperrkonto). The standard amount is €992 per month, or €11,904 for a 12-month visa. After arrival you can withdraw up to €992 each month. Some consulates ask for a different amount if you have a scholarship or apply for another visa type, so check with the mission handling your file.

Canada: living costs plus first-year tuition

For study permit applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant living outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for living expenses. On top of that you must prove you can pay your first year of tuition and travel. Quebec has its own, higher figure and also requires a CAQ.

United Kingdom: 28 days of maintenance

You must show £1,529 per month if you study in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, held for at least 28 consecutive days. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026 the amounts rise to £1,570 and £1,203.

Common reasons applications are refused

  • Money deposited only a few days before the statement date
  • Statements without the bank's stamp or a verifiable reference
  • Funds held in a currency or account type the embassy does not accept
  • A sponsor's letter without proof of the sponsor's relationship and income

Can a parent's account be used as proof of funds?

Often yes, with a sponsorship letter and proof of relationship and income — but rules differ by country, so confirm with your embassy.

Do these amounts change?

Yes, usually once a year. The figures above are correct as of October 2026; the official pages always take precedence.
